Queen’s win on the spot

Queen’s Park were on the spot as they beat Berwick on Saturday.

A Jamie McKernon penalty earned the Spiders all three points.

Boss Gus McPherson was pleased with the victory, even if the match was not a classic.

He said: “I’m delighted, it wasn’t always pleasing on the eye but getting that first win is key.

“Berwick forced us into defensive situations but we dealt with it well and when they had a chance Jordan made a good save.

“The defence can be pleased with the day’s work, the midfield worked hard and we were smart up front - there are positives even if it wasn’t a free-flowing game of football.”

Kick off for the game was delayed by 30 minutes after the Berwick team bus was delayed in traffic.

Gus was pleased it didn’t affect his team’s focus.

The spot kick was awarded after William Mortimer was fouled in the box, and well converted by McKernon.

Queens could have had more than one goal, with Kindlan’s knock-down helping Osadolor to burst past a marker and shoot just wide of Brennan’s left-hand post in the first half.

However, they were left grateful to keeper Jordan Hart in the second half, after a splendid near-post block from a Phillips shot in 86 minutes.

The Hampden men were in action again last night, against Ayr in the Irn Bru Cup, before an away trip to Annan this Saturday.
