EURO BIKING THRILLS AT BRAES

Kirkhill

Kirkhill Bowling Club paid tribute to a past president who died suddenly the day before their Grouse Invitation Fours competition.

A minute’s silence was observed for Christine Macleod who had been an integral part of the tournament for many years.

Christine, a much- loved member at Kirkhill, had won the ladies’ championship in recent years but sadly passed away peacefully on August 3.

Before play commenced, players scoffed down a roll and coffee and were welcomed by club president John Coubrough.

The teams played five games each, three in the morning and the remaining two after lunch.

And the winners from each of the six sections, plus the next two best teams, went into the quarter-finals.

After some exciting action on the greens, the two finalist teams were both from Kirkhill.

Kenny Harkin, Ronnie Lewis, Chris Allan and Stephen Leonard were victorious in the end over the team consisting of Michael Dooley, Sam Guthrie, George Lowe and Ronnie Wilson.

Kirkhill member Geoff Williamson said: “Apart from it being a friendly, competitive match, the weather was very kind.

“A great day was had by all with competitors looking forward to next year’s event.

“A big thank you goes to all the caterers, bar staff and all those members at Kirkhill Bowling Club who worked tirelessly to make the day a success.”

Kirkhill Bowling Club is grateful to Famous Grouse Whisky for their sponsorship.

Burnside

The week began with the usual Monday night aggregate game and the prizes last week were won by the old experienced team of Tom Connor, Archibald Coupar, Alan McLennan and skip Ken Stirratt.

In the Rutherglen and District Triples there was a balanced result against Tollcross BC when the home team of Scott Stevenson, Philippo Wolfson and super skip Ken Stirratt won by 17 shots to 9. However, the away team suffered a 15 – 21 defeat after dragging themselves back into the game.

Wednesday saw Overtoun BC come to Burnside for the Cambuslang and District Senior 4’s games. Both Burnside teams were in top form and ran out comfortable winners.

The green was crowded on Friday night when the nominated triples games and a Championship semi final game were played. The spectators were given a real treat with the Club Championship game when Alexi Abercrombie and Cammy Taylor delivered a great game of bowls. This game ebbed and flowed with both players having strong periods throughout the game but Alex ran out the eventual winner by 21 shots to 13.

The triples games were keenly contested and the teams of Iain Mackintosh, James Elborn, Iain McShane and Peter Monaghan, David Lyburn and Andrew Wilson both marched on into the semi finals.

On Saturday the club hosted the Scottish Deaf Bowling Association finals and all who attended were given a feast of great bowling. Teams from all over Scotland took to the green on the day. Burnside’s very own Jack Connolly was competing in the Gents final against Graham Duff of Hillside BC ( Edinburgh).

This was a very close game that lasted 22 ends and both players held the lead at various times throughout. However, Graham Duff ran out the eventual winner by 21 shots to 19.

Halfway & District

The Ladies Tildesley Triples (sponsored by John Kerr) was supposed to take place on Sunday but the inclement weather meant that no bowling took place.

A sociable day was still had by everyone. This Saturday is the club’s annual day out and the venue this year is Perth Races. The bus will depart at 10am and the kitchen will be open from 9am, serving breakfast rolls.

Both Halfway teams had good results at home in the Lanarkshire League last Friday night. Division 3 beat Motherwell 6-0 and Division 10 beat Wishaw 4-2 to ensure both teams will stay in their respective divisions.

The last round of games take place this Friday with a 6.15pm start. Division 3 are at home to Motherwell MW , while Division 10 travel to Motherwell MW for their game.

The RDBA Triples teams lost both games against St Leonard’s last week. Opponents in the final round of games this week are Kingswood.

In the District 26 Monday morning league Halfway A were three points off the top going into the last round of games on Monday. They won away but lost at home to East Kilbride last Monday.

In order to win the group they would to win both games against Hamilton Caley and hope Udston and East Kilbride lode both their games.
