Glencairn turn up heat after interval

- Jonathan Geddes

Glencairn enjoyed second-half seventh heaven against Girvan last weekend – after boss Willie Harvey blasted them at half-time.

The Glens gaffer told the Reformer he tore into his team for only being one up at the break, and was rewarded with a goal rush in the second half.

The thumping 8-0 win sent Glencairn top of the league.

Willie said: “I was actually really annoyed at half-time because we’d had a lot of chances and hadn’t taken them.

“This is the sort of game that has cost us points the past couple of seasons, where we weren’t taking our chances and they could have easily had come back in the second half and got something.

“I made sure the players knew I wasn’t happy, and the second half was much better.

“It would have been easy to take the foot off the accelerator, but we kept going and gave everything.”

Despite a cracking start to the season, Willie isn’t getting carried away, especially ahead of a tough trip to play Cumbernauld this weekend.

He said: “We’re not getting beyond ourselves.

“We’ll be tested this weekend. A lot of people will think this game is a marker, and if we lose we’ll be called a flash in the pan, and if we win people will say that we are the real deal.

“I’m not paying any attention to that. There are no prizes handed out at the end of August.”
