Mairs Family lead way at Stonelaw Parish gigs

Folk music fans are in for a treat with two special shows set to take place in Rutherglen over the next few weeks at Stonelaw Parish Church.

First up is the return of the popular Acoustic Nights at the Meeting Place series, which returns after a brief summer break next Friday, August 31.

Headliners will be the Mairs Family Band, who are Alan, Louise and Hazel Mairs, with Cameron Oliphant completing the line-up.

The band features all instrument­s and all styles from contempora­ry to traditiona­l with full bluegrass vocal harmonies including a gospel repertoire.

All members of the band have had many years experience in the live music scene and have toured three times in the USA.

There will then a special ticketed gig, again at the Meeting Place, on Saturday, September 8, with Martha Spencer and the Whitetop Mountain Band topping the bill. They are a family-based group from the highest mountains of Virginia, boasting everything from fiddle/banjo instrument­als to powerful solos and harmony vocals on blues, classic country, honky tonk, traditiona­l bluegrass numbers, old timey ballads, originals, and mountain gospel songs.

Shows also include high energy flat foot dancing and the band is well known for their high energy and charisma on stage. having played at a host of festivals across America and Europe.

For the group’s 2018 UK Tour, the band will consist of an all-gal line-up of Emily Spencer on banjo and vocals, her daughter, Martha Spencer, on fiddle, vocals and dance, Debbie Bramer on bass and dance, and Kelley Breiding on guitar and vocals.

Entry to the Mairs family band gig costs a £5 donation fee, with tea/filter coffee and home baking included Children go free. Tickets for the Martha Spencer gig are priced at £ £10 and they will go on-sale at the Meeting Place from August 31.
