Boss pleased with winning mentality

-

Glencairn gaffer Willie Harvey was delighted at his team’s mental strength in beating bogey team Cumbernauld United 3-2.

The Glens have struggled in recent years against Cumbernauld, particularly away from home, but fought back from a half-time deficit, and then conceding a late equaliser to stay top of the table.

The win was sealed by a thumping Gary Smith free kick.

Willie said: “We would have lost that game in previous seasons.

“We would have tried to hold on for a draw (after it went to 2-2) and that would have created problems.

“Now the mentality is different, it’s about trying to win rather than settling for draws.

“If you can keep that going it makes a big difference, it helps you become like a fortress.

“We had missed good chances in the first half and you start to think ‘is this going to be one of those days’, but we kept going and kept playing well.”

The Glens return home to face Arthurlie this weekend, with a 2pm kick off. Willie added: “Arthurlie basically have a new squad and they’ve been hot and cold so far.

“They’ve got Derek McNab there, who will want to prove to us that we should have kept him.

“We let him go simply because the shape we were playing wasn’t going to give him regular football every week, but we know he’s a good player and what he can do.”
