St Bride’s curry favour for Kerala

- Jonathan Geddes

Kind-hearted parishioners ate up to help a good cause recently.

St Bride’s Church in Cambuslang hosted a curry lunch last Sunday as part of their ongoing efforts to help out those living in Kerala, the Indian state that has recently suffered horrific flooding.

The devastating flood has killed over 400 people since June and many of the local Indian community come from the area.

That made parishioners determined to help out, joining with the Kala Keralam Cambuslang group to organise events such as a coffee morning, collections after Mass and the special lunch after Sunday’s service.

Money also came from donations made at the church’s weekly Eat Up initiative.

And the total number pulled in was a whopping £4,996.36, which will go towards building two new homes for families in India that have been left homeless by the floods.

Some of the money will also provide emergency relief in the 8th district of the state of Kerala.

Father Paul Morton said: “The information from Kerala is horrific - I think 90 per cent of land was covered with water and although things have improved, I believe the monsoon season is only halfway through.

“We were approached by the Kala Keralam group about fund raising, and originally the plan was just the coffee morning.

“I said about a collection, and then the idea for having the curries came from there.

“They were delicious, and proved very popular. People are amazingly generous and responsive in the parish, and I am always proud of how they respond to requests for help from those that need it.” Father Morton added that the money raised will be a big help to the ongoing relief efforts.

“The majority will go towards two new houses, as well as helping with the immediate problem of just feeding and clothing people in Kerala.”

The church also recently fund raised for Project Gambia, earning £2500 for the cause.

Project Gambia’s Fundraising Team Leader, Aidan Curivan, said on the support they received “Through fantastic support from both Father Morton and the parishioners, we were able to raise an outstanding total of £2500.50.

“Thanks again to Father Morton for making us feel so welcome in his parish. I definitely speak for all our volunteers when I say that he made us feel at home and as part of the parish”.

Project Gambia: People Feeding People supports a school of deaf children in West Africa, St. John’s School for the Deaf.

The school is one of the only schools for deaf children in one of Africa’s poorest nations.
