Harvey cannot believe penalty call

Glencairn boss Willie Harvey was left shaking his head at the penalty decision that cost his side their 100 per cent record on Saturday.

The Glens gaffer reckons even opponents Darvel Juniors were stunned to be awarded the spot-kick.

Although keeper Gary Whyte saved the effort, Greg Vernon converted the rebound to cancel out Craig McGregor’s diving header in the first half.

Willie said:“Everybody I’ve spoken to says it was never a penalty. That’s not just our fans saying that, there were folk from Darvel saying the same thing to me.

“Kris Gebbie has won the ball, he was dribbling clear and he was actually caught by their lad, and the referee decided it was a penalty. It was an unbelievable decision.”

Willie was also left to curse Darvel goalkeeper Michael Wardrope, who pulled off a host of terrific saves.

He added:“Their keeper had a phenomenal day. It wasn’t poor finishing from us, it was just that he was inspired.

“It was two points dropped, but I can’t blame the lads for it, because they worked hard, got shots on target and did all they could. Sometimes you just have a day like that.”

The Glens had made two changes for the game, with goalscorer McGregor and midfielder Jordan Leyden brought in.

Willie added:“McGregor came in for Rhys Donaldson, who’s been a mainstay for us. He played really well and took his opportunity.

“Jordan came in for Ryan McArdle and there was a bit of rustiness but he worked very hard - he can get better but there was 100 per cent effort.”

The Glens are back at home on Saturday against Kilsyth Rangers, with kick off at 2pm.
