Rutherglen Reformer

A total disrepect to the community

-

The ongoing closure of the Post Office on Rutherglen Main Street has now reached farcical levels.

For almost 100 days the premises have been shut, with hardly a word from bosses regarding the closure or, more importantly, when or if it will re-open.

You would think we were dealing with nuclear launch codes given the secrecy with which they’ve approached the matter, whether in dealing with enquiries from the Reformer, MPs, MSPs or ward councillors.

Put simply, it’s a sign of disrespect towards the community.

Telling locals to go to Burnside or Cambuslang ignores the reality that many of its regular customers are pensioners, and such a trip represents a hardship.

The Post Office will almost certainly have legitimate reasons for the closure. However it occurred suddenly and unannounced – poor form for a company whose cornerstone is communication.

Refusing to reveal any more details has only served to create continued speculation.

And completely ignoring alternative options, such as a possible new home in the Exchange shopping centre, implies an arrogance that should not be found in an important public service.

This impression is re-enforced when Rutherglen is referenced as being part of Glasgow, a state of affairs that hasn’t existed for decades.

Meanwhile it is the people of Rutherglen who suffer as a result.

They deserve better.
