Group to put best foot forward at fundraiser

Charity walkers

- Jonathan Geddes

A group of locals will go on a stroll to raise money for Cancer Research UK this Saturday.

The walkers will start at the old Burnhill Sports Centre on Toryglen Road and make their way to Overtoun Park before heading back towards the Main Street and eventually finishing up near Shawfield.

The walk is the brainchild of Elizabeth McDonald.

More than 40 people, young and old, have signed up to follow in her footsteps and she is delighted at the support.

Elizabeth said: “I was doing a cancer screening survey earlier this year and the response we got showed the amount of people in the area affected by cancer.

“It got me thinking that I wanted to do something to help out such a good cause.

“I’ve done things like Pretty Muddy in the past and I thought it would be good to do something that lots of people could sign up for.

“I’m delighted with the response we’ve got.

“Lots of people have signed up for it. We’ve got over 40 adults and there’s going to be some kids coming along for it too.

“Healthy ‘n’ Happy are supporting us as well.”

Elizabeth, who is a youth worker, added: “A place like Burnhill gets a bad reputation but there are still good people here who are happy to help out and get involved when it is a cause like this.

“It’s been nice to see community spirit like that is still there.”

This Saturday will see several walks taking place across the UK to help the charity.
