There were two games of real interest last week.

The first was on Tuesday when six triples lined up against Kirkhill BC In the Gemmell Cup competition.

Burnside only had to win two of the six games to lift the trophy.

David Robertson, Match Secretary, strained every cranial cell to produce teams capable of getting the necessary result.

Early indications were that the weather would not be favourable but the clouds parted just as the games started and the sun came out to ensure perfect bowling weather.

Halfway through the games, Kirkhill were leading in five of the six games but the Burnside crew rallied to win three of the six games.

Well done to all players involved over the last month.

On Saturday, the Nominated Two Bowls Pairs competition took place.

This competition was won by Iain Mackintosh and Kenneth Stirratt over the last two years and they threw down a challenge to all present on the day.

This obviously motivated everyone and the final was contested by the pairings of Alex Abercrombie and Jack Connolly against David Robertson And Douglas Johnston.

In the end, the mixture of aged experience and youth shone through when Alex and Jack managed to win.

Once again all players should be congratulated for contributing to a day of bowls enjoyed by everyone.

On Saturday September 15 the ladies played the final of the official games namely the two bowl pairs.

The afternoon proved to be a big success despite the lack of numbers and the weather was kind to us.

The winners were Lilian Wylie and Margaret McCracken and the runners were May Beggs and Peggy Stirling.

The Gents Finals weekend took place over September 14 to 16.

Last years’ Club Champion Craig Jamieson was again in this years final and he played Past Champion Scott Russell.

A very good final with Craig eventually winning the game. All finals played were as follows:

Boyd Trophy Winner - Craig Jamieson and runner-up Alan Johnston

Noble Trophy Winner - John MacDonald and runner-up Kinnon Stark

Handicap Winner - Craig Jamieson and runner-up Alan Johnston

Seniors Winner - Jim Kirk and runnerup John MacDonald

Nominated Pairs winners John MacDonald/ Scott Russell and runnersup Ian Skillen/Jim Kirk

Last Saturday saw the Mixed Rinks (sponsored by Dara Campbell) take place at Halfway & District.

Eventual winners were Iain Firth, Margaret Lynn, Fiona Firth and Jim Lynn who defeated Nancy McIlree, Jeanette Armstrong, Martin McIlree and David Armstrong in a good final.

This Saturday sees the George Mair Triples (sponsored by Donachie CA) take place with a 9.30 for 10am start.

As usual, two teams will travel up from Milton Keynes to take part in what is always a popular day.

On Sunday afternoon Stewart Dunsmore beat Steven Louden in the final of the John Docherty Singles.

Earlier in the morning the Ladies VP Pairs Final was abandoned after 6 ends.

It will be played to a conclusion on Friday September 28.

The last remaining final will take place on Sunday September 30 at 3.30pm when Helen Torrance & Sandra Keary play Shirley & Mary McIntyre in the Ladies Presidents Pairs.

It’ll be a battle of the sexes at Halfway & District on Saturday September 29.

As part of our closing weekend we’re going to have a Ladies v Gents challenge match.

Dress code for the day will be casual and there will be no cost.

All we ask is that everyone brings along a bit of food and we’ll have an open buffet.

Members can also bring along non-bowlers if they fancy giving the game a try.

Sheets are on the Ladies and Gents noticeboards so please append your name so we have an idea of numbers.

The annual coffee morning for MacMillan Cancer and The Beatson will take place this Friday (September 21) at 11am. Door and raffle tickets are now on sale. All raffle and baking donations will be greatly appreciated.
