McColl highlights growth of ‘Lang as a team

-

Cambuslang . 1 Cumnock ...... 0 Cambuslang’s solid win on Saturday over Cumnock highlights how far the club have come, insists boss Paul McColl.

When the sides last met in a friendly, Lang were on the wrong end of a hammering.

However, a John Gemmell strike in the 56th minute earned Cambuslang a deserved 1-0 victory on Saturday, and saw them climb the premiership league table.

McColl’s lads are now sitting in sixth place with 13 points, but are just three points off second spot.

The manager was delighted not only with the win over his old side, but the performance from his players.

He told the Reformer: “It was a good result after last Saturday where we didn’t do so well.

“The first half was fairly even but we were passing the ball about well. In the second half we upped our game and for some reason always seem to create more chances at home in the second half.

“I was pleased with how we played because Cumnock beat us 6-0 or 7-0 in a friendly around 18 months ago.

“We travelled down there and were 4-0 down in the first 20 minutes. Friendlies obviously aren’t the same, but it still shows how far we’ve come.”

After a crazy run of fixtures where the Lang lads faced four away league games on the trot against strong teams, McColl is relishing upcoming matches.

First up is an away tie at Petershill, who are fourth bottom in the league, followed by a home match against Renfrew, who are struggling at second bottom.

Then three consecutive home games against Ayrshire sides Troon, Irvine Meadow and Kilwinning Rangers beckon.

McColl said: “I thought we’d be around mid table at this stage so we’re doing even better than that.

“We’re technically three points off second top in the league, and now we’ve got a good run of games at home against teams who have come up to this division with us.

“No game is easy in this league, but I’m hoping some of those matches are winnable.”
