6-1, BUT HARVEY’S NOT HAPPY

Gaffer thinks league toppers can’t still do better

Larkhall Th ... 1 Glencairn ...... 6

Glencairn continued their blistering start to the season with six more goals on Saturday - but manager Willie Harvey was less than pleased.

The Rutherglen lads are still flying high at the top of the West Region Championship after hammering Larkhall Thistle 6-1 away from home.

Willie Harvey’s side have banged in 34 goals in just eight league games so far, but the gaffer insists there is still room for improvement.

Willie said: “The scoreline looks great, but we didn’t actually play that well overall.

“Our play was quite scrappy and our passing wasn’t up to its usual standard. There was also inconsistency from the officials which meant there was a lot of stopping and starting during the game.

“Larkhall have been the whippping boys in the league but they worked really hard against us and should be applauded.

“For us, we need to maintain high standards. We are playing well but we can’t let our standards drop as we’re only eight games into the season and there’s a long way to go.”

Glencairn made it 22 points out of 24 with the win over Larkhall at Gasworks Park.

And the 6-1 scoreline followed on from last week’s 8-1 thumping home win over Kilsyth Rangers.

Glens took the lead in seven minutes when Dale Simeon’s shot was deflected into the path of Gary Smith at the back post, and the striker volleyed home his 17th goal of the season.

The second goal came in the 18th minute when Simeon collected a pass from Smith before dribbling past the keeper and rolling the ball into the empty net.

The skillful midfielder made it a hat-trick by drilling home two more strikes in the 62nd and 63rd minute.

Thistle pulled a goal back in the 71st minute when a freekick was lifted into the penalty area and Bartosz Mackiewicz got in between the defence and keeper Whyte to head into the corner of the net.

Glencairn made it 5-1 in the 82nd minute when McKay’s corner was met by the head of Stevie Kerr, as he bulleted the ball into the top right hand corner.

With five minutes remaining, Gebbie raced to the byeline and delivered another fine cross into the box, where Jay McKay unleashed a sweet volley past the helpless McGraw.

The win keeps Glencairn top of the league, three points ahead of Benburb.

Simeon was announced as man of the match on the club website and Willie Harvey was also full of praise for his new signing.

He said: “Dale Simeon was outstanding. He’s been playing really well all season but hadn’t been scoring as freely as he did for Cambuslang previously.

“But on Saturday his allround game was fantastic and he took his three goals well.”
