No flash... but still plenty of substance

Pryce rates the Glen’s latest win

- Marc McLean

Glencairn assistant boss Joe Pryce knows the Glens weren’t as flashy in their weekend win as in previous games - and reckons that’s a good sign for the future.

The Glens beat Kello Rovers 3-1 at the weekend to remain pacesetters in the league, thanks to a goal from Liam Gormley and a Harry Mitchell double.

But if the performance lacked the goal flurry that marked recent 8-1 and 6-1 wins then Joe, who was taking the team with usual gaffer Willie Harvey away on holiday, was pleased with the grit shown.

He said: “We weren’t at our best, but we still picked up three points and that’s 25 out of 27 now, so you have to be happy with that.

“The really pleasing thing is that we didn’t play that well and still won fairly comfortably. In previous seasons, if we weren’t at our best then we would drop points, and that didn’t happen on Saturday.

“We still created plenty of chances and should have won more comfortably, and we never looked like we would lose it, so it wasn’t like we played poorly.

“This is a tough league and teams will fight hard in it. Teams know that we’re playing well and can score goals, so they’re going to defend more, and they’ll be up for it as we’re the league leaders.

“So we had to be patient on Saturday, and just keep going.”

Joe was also pleased at the game’s two goalscorers, who were both called into action due to the absence of top goal scorer Gary Smith and winger Jay McKay.

And the replacements came up with the goods, with Gormley opening the scoring and Mitchell making it 2-0 a minute later.

An Andrew Cunningham penalty hauled the visitors back into it, setting up a tense second half, with Mitchell’s second goal five minutes from time sealing the points.

Joe added: “It showed that we have a really good squad. They were enforced changes but both Harry and Liam came in, played well, scored goals and you can’t ask for more than that. “

Now the Glens can take a break from league action, and focus on the Scottish Junior Cup.

On Saturday, they’ve got a home tie against Aberdeenshire outfit Deveronside in the second round.

Joe said: “We don’t know too much about them, I think we last played them five years ago.

“But we’ll be taking them seriously, and we’re glad we’ve got them at home.

“Jay’s still on holiday, but otherwise we’ll have a full squad to chose from.”
