Conor’s 3 peaks challenge

Mum adds family support

- Jonathan Geddes

A Cambuslang student is hoping to scale the heights for a good cause today (Wednesday).

Conor McGlinchey will take on the National 3 Peaks Challenge, with a little help from his mum Shona.

And kind-hearted Conor, who works at Morrison’s in Cambuslang, will be aiming to raise money for CLIC Sargent charity too.

The challenge will see Conor try to summit Ben Nevis (Scotland), Scafell Pike (England) & Mount Snowdon (Wales) all within 24 hours, starting with Ben Nevis this morning.

The total climb is 3,064m, with a walking distance of 37km, and a driving time of around 10 hours between them, with Shona taking charge of the driving.

Having previously trekked to Mount Everest’s base camp last year, Conor is excited by the new challenge.

He said: “I quite like to push myself and do different challenges, so it should be really good. Everest was pretty hard but three peaks over 24 hours will probably be the toughest thing I’ve done.

“Morrisons as a whole has CLIC Sargent as their chosen charity, and it’s a charity that do a lot of good so it seemed an obvious way to help them out.”

He’s also pleased to have his mum’s support, as well as work colleagues.

The former Cathkin pupil added: “It’s really nice. She’s offered to do all the driving, so that’ll be good, and she’ll be a great support to have - I’ll be able to sleep between the mountains that way!

“My store manager has been really supportive, and I’ve had some nice donations from other staff. Hopefully I’ll get a little more before I go.”
