Spiders pay the penalty

Elgin ..................... 2 Queen’s Park ........ 1

Queen’s Park caretaker boss Mark Roberts called for his players to be more ruthless in front of goal after a late penalty condemned the Spiders to defeat.

However Mark felt the game could have been settled long before Shane Sutherland’s late spot kick, if only Queen’s had taken their chances.

He said: “Once again though we failed to be ruthless enough in front of goal, despite creating a number of clear cut chances, and we have been punished for that at the other end.

“We didn’t get going in the second half and with the elements against us it made out task more difficult but we did have a number of excellent chances which we passed up and that is a real frustration.”

The Spiders had enjoyed a cracking start, after Peters pounced on a mistake in the home defence to fire a left-footed shot beyond Gourlay in the 13th minute, before missing an array of chances.

However Elgin improved as the game went on, levelling the match in the 61st minute.

A corner wasn’t cleared and McLeish powered a shot into the net.

Queen’s looked like they had earned a point, but with just a minute left keeper Jordan Hart clattered into Miller, and Sutherland made no mistake from the spot.

Queen’s now prepare to welcome Clyde to Hampden on Saturday.
