Glens demolish rivals in eight goal frenzy

-

Glencairn boss Willie Harvey watched his side cruise to victory against Deveronside - and reckons it showed the side’s strength in depth.

The Glens hit eight goals for the fourth time this season as they demolished the North Region Division One side in the Scottish Junior Cup, despite giving the likes of top scorer Gary Smith a rest.

Willie said: “We’d left Smith, McKay, McArdle, Leyden and Whyte out those are players who would normally start and from this we’ve learned the depth we have.

“What Saturday showed is that we have guys that are more than capable of coming in and starting for us. There’s strength and quality right through the squad this season, which will do us good when you start to have injuries as the season goes on.”

On the score sheet for the Glens were Dale Simeon with two, a double from Harry Mitchell, a brace from Liam Gormley and strikes from Craig McGregor and club captain Tony Fraser.

The thrashing could have been even more, with two goals ruled out for offside.

Willie added: “We hadn’t seen them play before, but we had looked them up and saw their record so we felt we’d be too strong for them, looking at our scores and theirs.

“They sat 11 bodies behind the ball and they were there to avoid a doing, to be honest - we could have had even more (goals) on the day.”

Impressing on the day was Harry Mitchell, who has started the past two games and netted four goals in the process.

“Harry had to wait his turn, but he has done all the right things. He’s trained hard and we could have brought Jay (McKay) back in but Harry was playing well and kept his place.

“That’s what we want - if you come in and play well you’ll be rewarded.”

The draw for the next round of the Cup takes place next Tuesday, while the Glens face a trip to midtable side Dalry Thistle on Saturday, as they look to remain top of the league.
