Gormley double keeps Glens on top

-

Dalry Thistle 1 Glencairn ..... 2 Glencairn came through the wars to stay top of the league on Saturday.

They defeated Dalry Thistle 2-1 thanks to a Liam Gormley double, and despite losing both Ryan Kerr and Harry Mitchell to injury during the game.

That came on the heels of Dale Simeon, Rhys Donaldson and Ryan McArdle all being out for various reasons.

Goalscoring hero Gormley, who netted both his goals inside the first 10 minutes, told the Reformer: “It’s a massive three points for us.

“The injuries did restrict the rhythm of the team in the second half, because we had to move some players around (to cope with the changes) and that does have an effect on how you play.

“It’s always good to hammer teams, but winning a game like Saturday, where it’s tight, actually feels a lot better.”

Gormley’s two goals kept the Glens’ fantastic unbeaten record going, even if he later missed a penalty that would have made it 3-0.

That meant there were a tense last few minutes after an Ian Cashmore spot kick pulled one back for the hosts.

The striker added: “It was a bit unfortunate, as it would have taken the pressure off to get the third.

“I took the two goals well and had scored a penalty the previous week, so I was confident when I stepped up.

“He just saved it with his legs, I thought I’d hit it well enough.”

Now the Glens turn their attention to Irvine Victoria on Saturday, as they return to the Celsius Stadium.

Gormley feels the Glens are full of confidence.

“You need to be confident going into every game.

“We treat every team the same, we’ll focus on them and try to get another three points.

“We know we need to keep winning to stay clear of Benburb.”
