Meet the TV actors, footballers, artists, and all-round ambitious professionals of the future.

These P4 pupils at Burgh Primary in Rutherglen had a great time in the classroom last week as they considered their dream careers.

It was all part of a ‘World of Work and Finance’event held in the school throughout last week.

A week of learning about future careers was just the job for kids at Burgh Primary in Rutherglen.

The school held a World of Work and Finance event last week, involving pupils throughout the school.

People from a variety of professions attended throughout and spoke to children about their jobs.

Rutherglen Reformer reporter Marc McLean chatted with P4 and P7 pupils last Wednesday and certainly enjoyed a very entertaining Q&A session.

Some of the probing questions from inquisitive pupils included, “How much do you earn?”; “What job would you be doing if you weren’t a reporter?” and “When are you going to retire?”

Karen Burnside, principal teacher at Burgh Primary, organised the event and reckons the youngsters got a lot out of hearing all about the world of work.

She explained: “We ran it for the whole week and involved the whole school.

“We have been doing this for the past few years and the children were asked for the top three jobs they would like to learn more about, and then I did my best to get people from various professions along to the school. The aim was to get the pupils to think about careers when they are older, and what types of skills and qualifications are needed for jobs.”

Karen was also delighted that so many busy people gave up their time to come and talk to the children about their experiences.

She added “We had a wide range of people who gave up their time to speak to pupils, which we were really pleased about.”

Professionals from various businesses and organisations attended, including The Dog’s Trust, Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale Bank, Financial Education Partnership, HMRC, Specsavers, Young Enterprise Scotland, and the SSPCA.

And the youngsters were interested to hear all about the different avenues that could be open to them when they are older in terms of the careers they might choose.

MSPs Clare Haughey and James Kelly made an appearance, as did Rutherglen policeman Johnny Simpson.

Stonelaw High pupils Matthew McGeachin and Darren Girvan also popped into and spoke about life at secondary school, which was of great help to the Primary Seven pupils in particular.
