Chicken plant to close next week
Reprieve for 2 Sisters staff is short-lived
The 2 Sisters chicken plant in Cambuslang will finally close its doors this Friday – just weeks after workers were offered shifts that “could last until the end of December”.
The Reformer told last week how workers who had been previously made redundant by the plant earlier this year were being texted and asked if they were interested in shift work.
The texts suggested that work could be ongoing until the end of the year, but bosses have now made the decision to close the plant for good at the end of this week.
The news, although expected, was greeted with sadness from local politicians. Clare Haughey MSP said: “It is deeply disappointing and very sad that after decades in the town, 2 Sisters will close its doors in Cambuslang for the last time this week.
“My heart goes out to the 450-strong workforce who were made redundant, other local businesses in the 2 Sisters supply chain, as well as the wider local community. I would like to thank the workers, Unite the Union, South Lanarkshire Council and the Scottish Government who all left no stone unturned in trying to save the plant and jobs.
“But despite our best efforts 2 Sisters always seemed intent on closing the site.
“It is a very sad day for Cambuslang and I hope all stakeholders can continue working together to minimise the damaging effect locally and to keep supporting those who have been made redundant.”
2 Sisters has been frequently criticised since the closure announcement was made earlier this year, with 450 jobs lost as a result of the decision.
A spokesman for the company said: “Our arrangements to move products from our Scottish factory have proved to be very challenging. As a result, we have had to extend planned closure dates for a number of extra weeks. However, this work is now almost complete and we can confirm full closure on November 2.
“We would like to thank colleagues for all their hard work and wish them well for the future.”
