Rutherglen Reformer

Cashfor ‘caring’

-

Generous Rutherglen residents handed over money to support children in Bellevue House –

completely unaware that they were funding an institution ruining countless childhoods.

Local Catholic churches called on residents to give donations to support“this great work of mercy”at the Rutherglen children’s orphanage.

In reality, the nuns who ran Bellevue House were merciless in their abuse of children placed in their care.

Theresa Ralston recalls that her family gave cash to the cause, without realising the terrible treatment she suffered there.

She said:“I remember the priest coming to our house looking for donations for the St Vincent De Paul, and my dad would give him money.”

The following advert titled “Children’s Refuge, Bellevue Rutherglen”was published in a St Columbkille’s brochure in 1940.

It read:“The refuge, which is a Diocesan Institution and placed under the charge of the Sisters of Charity, was founded by the late Archbishop Eyre for the purpose of providing a temporary home for Catholic children whose circumstances imperil their faith or morals. Funds are urgently required for this great work of mercy.

“Donations will be greatly acknowledged by the Sister Superior, or by the Honorary Treasurer Canon McBrearty, 10 Hillkirk Street, Springburn, Glasgow.”
