Danger road set for seven-week closure

Plans are criticised

- Jonathan Geddes

A Cambuslang road that locals believe is an accident waiting to happen is now closed for nearly two months.

Gilbertfield Road shut on Monday and will not re-open until December 20, with work being carried out to facilitate a sewer connection, construction of a new road junction and installation of traffic islands.

The move has already prompted concerns from parents at nearby Cairns and St Cadoc’s Primary schools who fear an even heavier amount of traffic will now be coming past the schools.

Gayle Murphy, who has two children at Cairns, told the Reformer: “This is a horrible time of year to be doing this.

“Since Monday we’re already seeing even more traffic coming down Woodlands and also through Cairns Road.

“Some of them are really big lorries and trucks, which is dangerous given the amount of cars already parked on those streets.

“You want the council to be doing work there to improve the road but this is going to be a nightmare when the weather gets worse, and there’s more rain or ice.

“People are going to get used to going down that way, and more traffic is the last thing we need.”

Earlier this year the Reformer told how many locals were worried by the road, particularly after work there left it more narrow than before.

Concerns over the road meant that more motorists were detouring away from the road, and instead heading down Woodlands Crescent.

Parents at the two schools have protested for years about the lack of any lollipop people in the area to help co-ordinate both traffic and school children.

The current works are in relation to the ongoing development by Persimmon Homes.
