AMY AIMING HIGH AT GERS

Ibrox boss looks to build on successful season

- Jonathan Geddes

The Cambuslang woman in charge of Rangers has declared herself satisfied with her first full season at the club — but reckons they can take another step forward next season.

Amy McDonald saw her team finish fourth last week, an improvement on last year’s sixth place.

But Amy believes that more consistency for the club could lead to greater rewards in the future.

She told the Reformer: “We set out to finish higher than we did last season and we did that, which was the most satisfying part of the whole season.

“I think there was a lot of individual player development too, where players were constantly learning and developing their game.

“However the one thing we lacked all season was consistency. That’s what we need to improve on for next season.”

Amy believes that the club let themselves down in a handful of fixtures, which cost them.

She added: “We felt there were a few games that let us down.

“The standard is very competitive, and we can’t go below our standards and expect to get by.”

A former Calderwood Primary and Stonelaw High pupil, Amy took charge of Rangers in May last year, having previously been the head of youth development at all conquering Glasgow City.

She is pleased by the amount of young talent emerging at the club, but is concerned that the vast majority of Scotland’s best players now head abroad to play.

She explained: “There’s more playing across the country now but the difficulty is that too many are leaving to go abroad.

“I think 16 of the national squad are away now, and that can dilute that quality if you aren’t careful.

“We have some fantastic players coming through at Rangers, but we don’t want to put too much pressure on the girls.

“Scotland reaching the World Cup is really exciting though, you hope that means there’ll be more support for the women’s game and more girls wanting to play the game.”

And Amy is already relishing next season’s challenge.

She added: “It’s a great honour to have this job, I know that.

“It’s a really exciting time for me, and I’m already looking ahead to next season.”
