Get ready for winter

-

Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey is reminding constituents to ensure their homes are ready for anything the cold weather might bring.

Last winter, more than 154,000 homes across Scotland experienced a boiler breakdown, leaving residents unable to heat their homes. During the‘Beast from the East’, temperatures of below -10°C and wind speeds of over 60mph led to the busiest week on record for Scottish Gas, with 13 times the usual number of calls for assistance coming in.

Ms Haughey said:“It’s really important to keep a step ahead of winter. I hope everyone in Rutherglen and Cambuslang is aware of what help is available to them and their family and friends, as well as the practical steps they can take to keep bills down and temperatures up.

“Being energy efficient is also really important, so I’d encourage people to seek advice from their energy supplier and stay smart with their energy use this winter.”

Scottish Gas service and repair engineer, Julie Dickson, added:“There are some really simple steps you can take to help prepare your house for winter and keep everything running like clockwork, but if something does go wrong, we’re always on standby to come to the rescue.”

Clare Haughey has backed Scottish Gas’10-point plan to keep people best prepared for the approaching cold, winter weather. Such steps include having a smart meter installed, bleeding radiators, insulating hot water systems, fitting a carbon monoxide detector, and maximising heat.

The 10-point plan can be found on the MSP’s website or alternatively, from her office on request.
