Rutherglen Reformer

A helping hand for the less fortunate

- Jonathan Geddes

Kind-hearted parishioners in Rutherglen have helped raise thousands of pounds for people in poverty-stricken countries.

Churches throughout the area have been fundraising for Christian Aid all year long, creating ways of earning money for the charity.

Now figures have shown that an impressive £10,370 was raised during 2017/2018.

This money has been sent to Christian Aid Scotland to help them support victims of emergencies and disasters, to campaign for a fairer world and for longer term development work.

The money was raised through Stonelaw’s Christian Aid Week envelopes (£1084 + Gift Aid), Stonelaw’s Big Brekkie in May (£313 + Gift Aid) and the Meeting Place Cafe’s takings for May (£930)

Other events which boosted the fundraising substantially, and which were supported by members and friends of all the Rutherglen churches, included the Coffee Fayre in Rutherglen West and Wardlawhill Church Hall last October, the Piggery Brae concert in the United Reformed Church in March and the Christian Aid Fun Run/Walk in June.

Stonelaw recently hosted a Christian Aid coffee morning as well.

Christian Aid aim to end poverty and injustice worldwide by focusing on several key areas, such as community health, inequality between men and women and humanitarian emergencies.

This involves working in partnership with local organisations, as well as with governments and the private sector.
