Too little, too late as Lang languish near bottom

Cambuslang Rangers’ concerning form continued after their comeback against Renfrew came up short.

The Lang were 3-0 down, but goals from John Gemmell and Jamie Hay set up a tense finish.

However, they couldn’t find an equaliser, with the result lifting Renfrew off the foot of the table, and leaving Cambuslang third bottom and firmly in relegation trouble.

Renfrew found themselves under the cosh in the early stages.

But, despite only having 13 fit players, they managed to regroup and strike first.

Rikki McIntosh opened the scoring in 20 minutes as he lashed home at the second attempt, firing beyond the Rangers keeper with a vicious effort from the edge of the box.

The hosts quickly seized upon their advantage and doubled their lead.

David McKenna showed his class with a neat reverse pass into the feet of Jason Hardie, outfoxing the Rangers’ back line and allowing the former Johnstone Burgh striker to slot home.

However, the half ended on a feisty note as ‘Frew captain Kieran Healy squared off with Lang striker Gemmell, with the latter sprinting 20 yards to get involved in the fracas.

Both players picked up a booking as a result. Renfrew were relentless after the break as McKenna tapped home number three after a Hardie effort was blocked.

A slap from Gemmell on Kieran Maxwell then went unnoticed from the referee but it ultimately would not matter.

The striker reduced the deficit from the penalty spot after Maxwell was penalised for handball, before Hay curled home a terrific free-kick beyond the helpless Danny McLeay in goal.

But despite a couple of late chances for Cambuslang, Renfrew held on for a massive three points.

The Lang now have a break from the league, as they play Rossvale in the Scottish Junior Cup on Saturday.
