Young boxers do club proud and meet idol

-

Two young boxers from O’Neils ABC in Cambuslang, finished the club’s season in good form in Preston last month and met a Commonwealth Champion into the bargain.

Bradley Welsh and Chloe Bodwick, who were fighting on MTK Manchester’s home show card, bumped into Commonwealth 51kg champion Lisa Whiteside.

Bradley (12) was first into the ring. He started off nervously but eventually got the better of his opponent, deservedly taking the decision on a 3/2 split.

This earned him his first ever win and an ecstatic Bradley said: “It’s my first win and it feels great!”

Delighted coach Brian Murphy Jnr added: “This will be a big confidence boost for him and I expect him to build on this for next year.”

Chloe (14) was on the wrong end of a 3/2 split, beaten by Amalie Garcia who she had previously beaten on a unanimous decision at the same venue in September.

She said:“That was a close fight. That makes it one win each. I’ll just have to get another fight and make sure it’s 2-1 to me!”

Coach Andy Rundell added:“I thought Chloe had nicked it. A couple of the judges and the ref told me it could have gone either way. It doesn’t detract from what was a good fight though and Chloe can be proud of how well she has done this season.“The club is looking forward to the coming months, with coach Andy Clayton excited at the prospect of an even better 2019.

He said: “Every boxer at the club this year has boxed to a very high level and we are delighted with their progress. Now after a great year we all have a well deserved break and look forward to coming back for a whole new season.”
