Fired up Glens boss up for cup

-

Glencairn boss Willie Harvey reckons his side shouldn’t fear anyone in the West of Scotland Cup – after Saturday’s display was so good it left him speechless.

The Glens ripped apart Irvine Victoria 5-0 to keep a four-point lead at the top of the Championship standings.

The Glens’ attention now turns to the cup, with Premiership outfit Kilbirnie Ladeside the visitors to the Celsius Stadium on Saturday.

The Glens gaffer said: “We played some wonderful football on Saturday, it was one of those games where it all came together.

“Some of the stuff we played, the one-touch football, was stunning and everybody in the team played their part.

“It’s the first time I went in at half time and there was nothing I could say – there was nothing that I wanted to tweak, or change.

“That was very close to the best I’ve ever seen the team play.”

The Glens’ current good form has carried them clear at the top of the table, with the league, and winning promotion, the clear top priority for the club this season.

However that doesn’t mean Saturday’s cup tie is being treated as a distraction.

Harvey added: “It’s a cup we’ve never won, and we tend to be unlucky with our cup draws. We’ve had that again here, with another side from the division above us.

“But we shouldn’t fear anyone. We’ll welcome Kilbirnie and give them a good game.”

Saturday also continued Gary Smith’s prolific goalscoring run, as a double made it 51 goals in just 50 appearances.

Harvey said: “Considering Gary has missed a few games through injury, it could have been even more.

“He is always in the right place and knows where to be.”

Ryan Kerr, who missed Saturday’s game with a hamstring injury, is expected to be fit again in time to play at the weekend.
