Health hub will be just the ticket

- EDEL KENEALY

A wellbeing hub which aims to improve people’s mental and physical health while bolstering community spirit is to open in Rutherglen next month.

Targeted at adults in the Burnhill area, the hub will support people to adopt a healthy lifestyle by offering exercise classes and wellbeing workshops free of charge.

The hub will launch on March 7 with a nine-week fitness programme.

It will run between 7pm and 9pm on Thursday evenings and offer locals a 45-minute fitness session and 45-minute wellbeing workshop which will cover a different topic each week.

Subjects to be covered include healthy eating, cooking on a budget, first aid, the importance of health screening in the fight against cancer and fire safety.

It is hoped the programme will afford locals the opportunity to improve their health while also getting to know their neighbours.

Elizabeth Mcdonald, who has spearheaded the nine-week programme with friends Pamela Conway and Jackie French, says she hopes it will go some way to offering parents an outlet in the community.

She said: “I put on Facebook, would anyone be interested in a fitness club. The idea was to get parents to concentrate on themselves and we had a fantastic response.

“It’s about getting people to interact with each other and feel like there are other people there to talk to, to have fun with whilst doing fitness and improving their mental health.”

Elizabeth, who has lived in Burnhill all her life, and her friends have developed the nineweek programme after doing a consultation with local people to find out what they want included in the course.

She said it will be a friendly and inclusive initiative for all and will cater to those who have never exercised or have not exercised in a long time.

Elizabeth added: “I want people to know there is no judgement. Often people are put off by the unknown, but we are local women who just want to help people in our area.”

Anyone interested in taking part in the nine-week programme is invited to the inaugural event on March 7 at West Parish Church, where they can get some more information about what is included.

Attendees will be offered a welcome pack with goodie bag and can sign up for the programme then if they feel it is suited to their needs. People are still welcome if they cannot attend every week.

More information about the hub is available on the Burnhill Action Group Facebook page.
