CLASS ACT WINS SPORTS AWARD

Burgh Primary is victorious

A Rutherglen primary school has been honoured for helping to develop the next generation of sports stars.

Burgh Primary won School of the Year at the sportscotl­and Scottish Sport Futures Awards 2019 last week.

They took the prize for the stellar work the school has done in Scottish Sports Futures’ (SSF) Jump2it programme and for continuing to embrace the concept of sport for change.

Burgh Primary School has been involved in the Jump2it programme for many years.

It is designed to give children a safe environmen­t to enjoy sport for free and JONATHAN GEDDES also educate on the dangers of alcohol and smoking.

The school has establishe­d itself as being dedicated to providing opportunit­ies for its young people in sport and physical activity.

Head teacher Vicky McCool was excited to win the award.

She said: “We are absolutely delighted to be the winner of the School of the Year award, it’s an honour.

“We believe that participat­ion in sport levels the playing field and gives young people opportunit­ies to succeed and excel.”

The awards showcased how sport can be used for positive social change.

They also celebrated the incredible commitment of the young people who engage in sport through SSF, as well as honouring those who have supported them throughout the year.

Stewart Harris, chief executive of sportscotl­and, said: “We were delighted to have teamed up with Scottish Sports Futures to celebrate the fantastic work being done through their initiative­s up and down the country. There were some truly inspiring stories among the winners, who through their hard work and dedication have shown how sport can be used for positive social change within their communitie­s.

Kirsty McNab, CEO of SSF, said: “We were proud and excited to have showcased our dedicated young people and their work at this spectacula­r event.

“We are committed to changing lives through sport and these awards give very deserved recognitio­n for the most incredible individual­s.”
