Detectives have made a renewed appeal for information regarding the shooting of Cambuslang man Paul McColl.
The call from cops came exactly one year on from the murder attempt which took place on Borgie Crescent.
Former Cambuslang Rangers boss McColl, 48, suffered gunshot wounds on February 21 last year, receiving injuries to his abdomen and face.
The gunman fired through the window of McColl’s car, with the target managing to stagger to the nearby Kirkhill bar, where pub regulars brought him towels to stem his bleeding while waiting for emergency services to arrive.
Police later received a report of a car on fire in Turnlaw Road near to East Greenlees Road in Cambuslang, which was subsequently linked to the shooting.
The vehicle was a silver Ford Focus which had been reported stolen from Camphill Avenue in Rutherglen in early January 2018.
Police are believed to be looking for reputed hitman Jordan Owen in connection with the shooting. Owen, 25, is an associate of James and Barry Gillespie, the Rutherglen brothers who are understood to control much of the illegal Scottish drug trade.
Detective Chief Inspector Martin Fergus from the Major Investigation Team (West) said: “We can definitively say that this was a targeted attack.
“However, this does not take away from how serious this incident was.
“Those who use firearms are not only endangering the life of their target but also other members of the public.
“It is vital that we trace the person responsible to ensure that this type of reckless violence is removed from our communities.
“I would like to reassure the public that the investigation is ongoing and everything is being done to trace whoever is responsible.
“We would still appeal for anyone with any information to come forward, no matter how insignificant it may seem, it could be the key to solving this investigation.
“I am certain that somebody out there will have the information that we need and I would urge them to think about the dangers that firearms bring to our streets and to get in touch with us.”
McColl, the son of longstanding Cambuslang councillor Clare McColl who passed away last year, later returned to his role as manager of the Somervell Park club.
However, he was sacked in January this year following a string of on-field controversies. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police via 101, quoting incident number 3953 Wednesday, February 21, 2018.
