COUNCILLORS THROW THEIR WEIGHT BEHIND THE PETITION

-

The petition to find a long-term solution to the flooding on Gilbertfield Road has won support from across the political divide.

All three councillors from the Cambuslang East ward have thrown their weight behind the campaign.

Walter Brogan told the Reformer he has been liaising with council officers on the issue for years.

“From personal experience, Gilbertfield Road is not fit for purpose,” Mr Brogan said.

“It is an obstacle course, a danger to pedestrians and vehicles and our [the council’s] piecemeal approach to resolving issues is unacceptable.

“Despite all the good work from council officers, the safety and wellbeing of residents and road users is continuously at risk.

“Yet again very large construction traffic is being diverted through busy scheme streets not fit for this type of traffic.

“Many of the vehicles have two or three attempts to get round street corners such as Castle Chimmins and Lightburn road.

“I reiterate my concerns that if an immediate and substantial improvement in the road management and conditions is not possible, Gilbertfield Road should be closed.”

SNP councillors Katy Loudon and Alistair Fulton have joined MSP for Rutherglen and Cambuslang Clare Haughey in writing to housing developers demanding an urgent meeting. Both councillors have been contacted by numerous constituents about the situation, which is causing significant disruption for them.

Ms Haughey said:“This has been an ongoing issue for well over a year and local residents are quite rightly angry that responsibility for fixing this appears to be being avoided by housing developers.

“It is entirely unacceptable that residents and road users have to put up with this potentially dangerous situation, while the developers continue to carry on regardless. They need to face up to their responsibilities and make this road fit for purpose.”

Mr Fulton added:“I have been advised that the cause of flooding is from the adjacent field in which existing field drains had been damaged during exploratory works by the developer.

“I have asked council officers in the roads department what measures can be done to alleviate the risk of flooding.

“I have also asked if they can look at installing below ground attenuation or filter drains.”
