Brandon gutted to lose out to old rival

Teenager must pick himself up after disappointment

- JONATHAN GEDDES

There was disappointment last Saturday for a budding young Rutherglen fighter.

Brandon Grant, a member of Durie’s ABC, competed in the final of the 46kg category at the Scottish Open class championships.

The final took place on a different weekend to the rest of the championships due to the amount of fighters entered in the contest, and the fact that they were only allowed to fight once a day.

Brandon had won his two previous fights to qualify for the final, where he faced his old rival Andrew Sneddon, of Forgewood ABC in Motherwell.

The two teenagers delivered a great contest, with each round hard to split.

Both boxers had good spells attacking and counter punching, but in the end it went to the Forgewood boxer by a split of 4-1 from the five judges

The Durie’s team were very disappointed in the result as all three coaches thought that Brandon had done enough to win.

Head coach Archie Durie said: “Taking nothing away from Andrew Sneddon, who is a top young boxer who won the Scottish title last year also and we wish him well in the future, but Brandon was really down losing this one.

“He trained so hard and already had two good wins under his belt in this competition, but that’s it over until the championships next year .

“He just has to pick himself up again.

“Overall in the Scottish Open we did well as we entered four boxers, with Shahzman Parnez and Saif Akram taking golds and Hassan Saleem and Brandon Grant both taking silver, so well done to the lads.”

Durie’s boxers were also out and about in the community recently, as they visited Trinity High .

Archie Durie had been asked by Paul Wright, the coordinator of Active Schools, to take part in the high school’s Sportsathelon which spotlighted judo, table tennis, and boxing,

Registered boxers for Durie’s ABC attended the night, with Cambuslang pair Ben Hamilton and Ruby Samson sparring in the ring much to the delight of the pupils who attended.

Also helping out with the hour-long class were Natalie Robertson, Albert Anthony, James McGuiness, Richard Nielson and Dan Murphy.
