DREAMLAND FOR KENNY

Cambuslang lad sinks Man City

Kenny McLean admitted he was in dreamland on Saturday after his goal helped down the English champions.

Cambuslang lad Kenny netted the opener in Norwich’s thrilling 3-2 win over Manchester City.

The stunning result was the first defeat of the season for the champions, and a delighted Kenny believes it proves Norwich can compete with the giants of the English game.

He told the Reformer: “It was pretty special to get my first goal.

“Nobody really gave us much of a chance and we’ve got a few injuries at the moment. To go out and then beat the best team in the world was brilliant and the atmosphere was crazy. It felt like the whole place was bouncing after we scored.”

Kenny notched the opening goal in the 18th minute when he headed home from a corner, his first goal in the Premier League.

Todd Cantwell added a second strike 10 minutes later, before Sergio Aguero grabbed one back for the visitors just before halftime.

However former Celtic striker Teemu Pukki restored the twogoal lead in the 50th minute, and despite another goal from Rodrigo two minutes from time, the Canaries held on for the win, sparking jubilant scenes at Carrow Road.

Kenny, who is set to become a dad later this year, said: “It does tell us that we can beat anyone on our day. I think when promoted clubs go up you are usually tipped to go straight back down but we’ve got the quality for this.

“There was a lot of talk over the summer that we hadn’t spent enough, but we built this squad up and we are ready for the Premier League.”

Matches like Saturday’s are part of the reason Kenny moved down south in the first place, with the former Cathkin High pupil leaving Aberdeen in January 2018 to sign with Norwich, who were in the Championship at that point.

He added: “The ambition is to play at the highest level and at the moment I don’t think there’s a better league in the world than the Premier League in England.

“When I go to Anfield or I’m up against Manchester City, I do have to pinch myself a little, but I’ve worked hard to get here and I’m here on merit.

“We lost one game between Christmas and the end of last season.

“And I’ve really developed as a player here too, I’ve had to become more disciplined.”
