Building starts on 88 homes
Work has started on the 88-house development planned for Cambuslang town centre.
The homes for social rent and shared equity sale are being built by Link Housing Association on the former Mitchell Engineering site off Bridge Street.
The social landlord was awarded planning permission for the development in 2017.
It includes four and six-storey blocks of flats comprising one and two-bedroom apartments; two and three-bedroom terraced and semidetached houses; associated parking, roads and landscaping.
Diggers moved in to prepare the site for construction earlier this month.
Link told Cambuslang residents in 2017 that it was looking forward to bringing the brownfield site in the town centre back into use.
In its planning application for the site, the social landlord said: “The site is located close to a long established town centre, Cambuslang Main Street, and is close to local amenities such as supermarket, local shops and cafes, schools, GP facilities and public transport such as Cambuslang train station and bus routes.
“Our approach is therefore to reconnect this site to Cambuslang, and to provide a broad mix of house sizes, from one-bedroom amenity flats for older residents, to larger family houses, and specifically designed wheelchair accessible houses and flats.”
Link says the homes will be highly energy efficient, using thick walls with high levels of insulation and solar panels to help address fuel poverty.
The Link development adds to the already approved 263 houses on the neighbouring Hoover site on Somervell Street.
Dawn Homes is building a mix of five, four and three-bedroom houses alongside eight terraced houses and 17 flats for social rent.
