Boxers gain valuable experience in narrow defeats
Duries Amateur Boxing Club of Rutherglen had two Cambuslang boxers in action recently.
The young boxers were in action at a Bannockburn ABC show in Stirling, where both local lads were having their second bouts against lads from Edinburgh.
First in was 15 year-old 58kg lad Alex Barnett, who was up against McTaggart &Scott ABC lad Connor Lynch.
He was about six inches taller than Alex and what a fight this was, with the crowd on their feet.
The Rutherglen boxer did not take one backward step in the fight, pressing on top of the taller opponent.
However, in rounds one and three the referee gave the Rutherglen boxer a standing eight count, which on both counts seemed uncalled for as it was Alex going forward and pressing the Edinburgh lad onto the back foot and putting him under pressure.
In the second round the referee gave a public warning, this time against the Broxburn fighter for use of his shoulder against the Rutherglen advancing boxer.
The verdict went to the judges and it came back a 3/2 split decision to the Edinburgh boxer.
There was a lot of people in the Cowie Miners Social Club who thought differently.
Next was Cambuslang 15 year-old Jamie Hamilton at 64kg against a Broxburn ABC boxer who was a lot smaller but with an aggressive allaction style which caught everyone in the Duries camp a little off guard.
His first attack against
Jamie saw the ref give a standing eight count but Jamie picked himself up and got on with things, finishing the stronger in each of the three rounds.
Each round was really close but when it came back the result was a unanimous decision against the Rutherglen boxer.
However head coach Archie Durie was heartened by what he saw.
He said: “Both boys were brilliant tonight. Neither got their hand raised as winners but they have taken valuable experiences from two hard contests against lads that might fight in the Scottish Novice Championships.”
Duries had a host of their fighters in action at the King’s Park Hotel last weekend too look for results and pictures from that card next week.
