SPATE OF VIOLENCE

Third teenager hospitalised in a month Teeth knocked out in attack in the park

- EDEL KENEALY

A third teenager has been hospitalised in the Rutherglen and Cambuslang area this month following a violent attack at the weekend.

The boy, believed to be 13, had his teeth knocked out following an incident in Cambuslang Park, a parent has claimed.

The incident at 5.30pm on Saturday reportedly saw a group of three boys and two girls chased by older teenagers

in the park, before one was caught and beaten.

A parent of one of the children says the boy will need teeth implants following the ordeal.

It is the third brutal attack to have taken place in the area in October.

Last week the Reformer reported that a 14-year-old boy was chased by a group of youths through Rutherglen and beaten near Mill Street.

The youngster was left with a shoe print on his face.

And on October 7, a 14 year old was left with lifethreatening injuries after be was stabbed at Rutherglen train station.

Warning other parents to be vigilant, a parent of one of the children involved in the incident said: “I want to make everyone aware that five quiet young teenagers were attacked by a larger group of boys.

“Two of the teenagers were hurt and had to go to hospital. Three managed to get away but have suffered a terrible ordeal witnessing their friends being hurt.

“The kids are all in shock and one of them will need implants in his mouth.”

The woman told hundreds of locals on the All About Cambuslang Facebook page that the children’s ordeal was made worse by the fact their attackers warned them not to go to the police.

“There is the right moral thing to do and there is the real life thing to do,” she said. “Would you risk putting your kid at risk of being targeted if these thugs find out?

“If they can knock a boy’s teeth out for nothing, what will they do to the person that reports them (probably much worse) and for what, they will likely still be on the street.”

The woman and other Cambuslang residents called for a greater police presence in Cambuslang Park, arguing it would prevent further attacks on innocent people.

The parent added: “This is the second attack I am aware of and I am sure there are likely more.

“We need this park patrolled by police or closed at night. I hope the local police look at this site and can put something in place as this park has been a problem as long as I can remember.”

A spokesman for Rutherglen Police said: “We are aware that the public have been concerned regarding the recent acts of disorder and assaults that have taken place in areas of Rutherglen and Cambuslang,

“I would like to reassure the public that the police will continue to be visible and patrol these areas to ensure you feel safe in our community.”
