Group ask for help tracking war heroes
Push to honour Cambuslang victims from WWII
MARC MCLEAN
A Cambuslang group is facing a race against the clock to track down the details of everyone from the town who died in WWII.
Cambuslang Remembrance Garden Group members are aiming to properly commemorate victims of the 1939-45 conflict by erecting memorial boards at Cambuslang Park.
These would fittingly be place alongside large steel memorial boards previously installed in honour of the town’s WWI vctims.
Aiming to have these erected in time for the 75th anniversary of VE Day on May 8, 2020, Cambuslang Remembrance Garden Group has a tight deadline.
Hilda Allison, treasurer of the group, is now urging anyone with details of Cambuslang relatives who died during WWII to contact her.
Hilda and husband Bob have been working tirelessly to collate a list of names, regiments and addresses of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We have more information on World War One than we do on World War Two,” said Cambuslang woman Hilda.
“If you walk into Mitchell Library you can get all the Cambuslang records for World War One but there’s nothing on the Second World War.
“There are records for Rutherglen, but not Cambuslang for some reason.
“I was surprised by this, maybe the War Department never had all the names.
“This is why we are putting out the appeal.
“We’ve gathered quite a few names already as a local person provided me with a big list.
“Some of the names we have are civilians and didn’t die in battle so it’s a little more complicated this time, too.
“We are also hoping to find the street names of where these people lived, which makes it more poignant and personal.
“It’s definitely a big task, but one we’re hoping the public can help us complete in time for May 8 next year.”
This is a special date as it will mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day – or Victory in Europe Day.
Traditionally held on a Monday, VE Day will be put back to Friday, May 8 in 2020, where the country will celebrate the anniversary of fighting against Nazi Germany coming to an end in Europe.
The WWI memorial boards were installed in Cambuslang Park several years ago at a discounted cost of £850.
It is expected that the WWII memorial boards would cost in the region of £1000.
