Help for families who flee domestic abuse

Women in South Lanarkshire who have fled domestic abuse and are moving from a refuge and into their own rented properties will now be able to purchase essential items for their new home, thanks to a partnership between Women’s Aid and local churches.
Women’s Aid South Lanarkshire & East Renfrewshire (WASLER) has signed a two-year partnership with Scottish Churches Housing Action (SCHA) – an organisation that brings together the main Christian denominations, with the vision of a Scotland free of homelessness.
The collaboration will support and encourage the contribution of churches to establish a starter pack project to support women.
Heather Zajac, SCHA development manager, said: “When someone gets a house from the council or a housing association, it is empty.
“Families may help, but often people are cut off from family.
“Churches are a crucial part of helping the community. We are encouraged by the response, and would welcome support from churches or communities.”
WASLER – one of 37 local Women’s Aid groups – provides services to women, children and young people in the South Lanarkshire and East Renfrewshire area.
WASLER refuge manager Lynsey Queen explained: “Having the support from the local churches to provide starter packs will make a huge difference.
“This can be very costly, and by having the funds donated it will enable women to not only purchase essential items for their new home but allow them to choose what they want to buy..”
Scotland’s new law on domestic abuse came into force in April, criminalising coercive and controlling behaviour
