Cambus coach calls for more composure

Cambuslang rugby coach Alex Donaghy has called for more composure from his struggling side.

Cambus slumped to a 22-0 defeat against Garnock last weekend, in a game played in atrocious conditions at Coat’s Park.

The loss leaves the local side firmly in the relegation mire, sitting second bottom of the table with just nine points, and facing a tough trip to

Lenzie on the horizon before the Christmas break.

But a defiant Donaghy said: “The scoreline did not reflect the game.

“It’s those wee errors that cost you points, and we had too many of them on Saturday.

“We played quite well, but simply gave them a try at the end of the first half, and then another one early in the second.

“That was the difference. I felt we had a bit of white line fever whenever we were attacking, and that was disappointing to see.

“Whenever we got inside the 22 we seemed to panic and we’d lose control of the ball, or play the wrong pass, or simply drop it.

“There just needs to be more composure there, when we are attacking.”

The Cambus coach also believed that the weather played into the visitors hands – but did not blame it for the defeat.

He added: “Garnock are a very defensive side, and the weather suited them more than it did us.

“They were able to stick the ball up the jumper and move forward, while we couldn’t play any fluid rugby in it.

“But we have to get better at dealing with it – we defended superbly for a lot of the game, but there are still too many mistakes that hurt us.”

Donaghy is hoping for an improved performance against Lenzie this weekend.

The sides met earlier this season, with Cambuslang losing 45-27 at Coat’s Park.

The coach said: “It’ll be a tough game, but when we played earlier this season we had a horrendous first 20 minutes when we let them score three tries, and then played very well the rest of the way.

“We have to try and control the game more, and let them make mistakes rather than forcing it too much.”

Saturday’s fixture is Cambuslang’s last of the year.
