Four goal blitz sends Glens out of the Cup

-

GLENCAIRN ........................... 0 PETERSHILL ........................... 4

Peter Ferguson Last season’s success seemed a long time ago, as Glencairn’s troubles continued with a crushing home defeat to Championship side Petershill in the replay of the fourth round Scottish Junior Cup tie.

The Glens found themselves a goal behind after only four minutes.

Possession was conceded cheaply with a loose pass out of defence, and Petershill took full advantage as James MacLennan crossed for Roddy Paterson to head past Grant Hay from close range.

The omens weren’t good for Glencairn as Tam Miller’s brilliant shot from 30 yards in the 10th minute had Wilson well beaten but rattled off the inside of the post and rebounded away from any player wearing black and white.

Petershill had the ball in the net again in the 25th minute when a free kick was deflected into the path of Anson and he drilled the ball into the net from close range, only to be denied by an offside flag.

Petershill gave their hosts a lesson in finishing when they doubled their lead just before half time.

A long ball round the back of the defence saw Roddy Paterson outpace Terry Hewitt, and he fired past Hay with the outside of his right foot for his and Peasy’s second goal.

It was 3-0 in the 49th minute as a cross came in and wasn’t dealt with by any defender, leaving Chris Ketterer with time and space to take a touch and stab the ball over the line right.

There was a touch of controversy about the fourth goal, as Craig McGregor appeared to be impeded by the referee in the build-up.

Play was allowed to continue and, with Glencairn pulled forward, Peasy quickly moved up for Scott Brodie to fire past Hay.

Mitchell was extremely unlucky not to score a goal of the season contender for Glencairn in the 78th minute as he danced his way into the penalty past four or five challenges, before being blocked in the act of shooting on the six yard line.

Glencairn’s afternoon was summed up in the 81st minute as Kerr’s shot was heading for the net, only for Matty Sutherland to pop up on the goal line and head the ball up onto the crossbar, and it rebounded back off his head before bouncing back out again.
