Clyde pay the penalty after blunder

Clyde boss Danny Lennon admitted he could only laugh after a horror penalty miss cost the Bully Wee all three points against Forfar.

Ray Grant had the chance to break the deadlock on the hour mark, but his penalty clipped the bar and then sailed right out of the stadium.

Lennon said:“Allan (Moore, Clyde assistant) just came out with a cracker in the office, saying not only did we lose two points, we also lost a ball. I’ve never seen a ball hit the bar like that and go on top of the stand.

“I thought over the piece we created the better opportunities. Sometimes as a coach you don’t get the overall reward, but what I did get from the group was bravery in trying to play in the way that we asked them. I thought we attempted to do that for 90 minutes.”

The Clyde gaffer was pleased at having kept another clean sheet, but a lack of ruthlessness meant the Broadwood side’s concerning form continued, with only one win in their last eight games now.

He added:“That’s four clean sheets out of five, but where we need to get it right is the final product and we had the chance to do that on two or three occasions, outwith the penalty. I thought their goalkeeper had a couple of great saves.”

The first half was a fairly drab affair with chances at either end limited.

Clyde came closest through Darren Smith after he turned and hit a shot in the centre of the box, but Forfar‘keeper Marc McCallum pulled off a good stop.

McCallum was called into action again after the break, saving Smith’s effort from a wide angle and a long range drive from Chris McStay, before Grant’s penalty woe.

The Loons almost made the breakthrough after a counter attack. David Mitchell did well to save a blistering strike from Dale Hilson, before a last minute corner fell to Callum Tapping in the middle of the box and his volley went narrowly over the crossbar.
