TRAGEDY AS BABY DIES IN HIGH-RISE

Enquiry launched into tot’s sudden death

- EMYLIE HOWIE

Police are probing the “unexplained” death of a baby at a property in Cambuslang.

The body of the three-month-old infant was discovered at a flat in Kyle Court early on Monday morning. A Police Scotland spokesperson told the Reformer: “Around 5.45am on Monday, December 16, police attended a report of a three-month-old baby found dead within an address on Kyle Court, Main Street, Cambuslang. “A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course. “The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.”

A resident of the tower block, who asked not to be named, said: “At about 6am on Monday, as I was on my way to work, I saw three police cars and an ambulance outside Kyle Court.

“You really don’t expect to see that many flashing lights at that time of the morning.

“The ambulance left shortly after, but I don’t think anyone was taken away in it.

“The police officers remained here until

around 10am. I have since heard that a little baby has died. What a terrible tragedy.

“People are in shock and so sorry for the little one’s family. It’s tragic, especially at this time of year.

“And it’s even worse because as far as I’m aware the council’s policy is that young children should not be living in these flats.”

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council confirmed they are aware of the incident but declined to comment further.

However, in May a spokeswoman for the local authority told the Reformer: “South Lanarkshire Council’s current and previous housing allocation policy generally restricts allocations to all council owned multi-storey properties, including Kyle Court, to households with no children under the age of 16.

“This policy was implemented in May 2011 and remains in place in the current housing allocation policy approved at executive committee on May 1.

“This aspect of the policy is in place as the council does not consider this type of property to be suitable for children in terms of their wellbeing, given that there is no separate or secure outdoor space, and given the potential for conflicts in lifestyle including noise, to be exacerbated by higher density living.”

The spokeswoman added: “The council does not regulate letting arrangements of private landlords, including within multi-storey blocks.”
