Pub’s helping hand on Christmas Day

- BY EMYLIE HOWIE

A Rutherglen pub will open its doors on Christmas Day in a bid to help the town’s lonely and vulnerable residents.

Harley’s Skybar will be open from 2pm to 5pm for anyone who would like to come along and enjoy some company.

Big-hearted Skybar owner Alexander McDowall and his wife Gillian are behind the idea.

Alex told the Reformer he decided to arrange the event in an effort to provide a Christmas dinner or even just a friendly face for those who need it the most.

He explained: “Growing up we had nothing and I’m now in a fortunate position where I can give a wee bit back.

“My mum Eileen scrimped and scraped to even feed us at times, so I am doing this in memory of her.

“Gillian and I just want to give something back to the community.”

A three-course home cooked meal will be provided free of charge to visitors and the couple will even provide entertainment in the shape of a piper all the way from New Zealand, who has kindly donated his time to their event.

And big-hearted regulars have got in on the act too, generously donating gifts to the pub to hand over to needy families.

Gillian McDowall said: “This is all about giving back to the community. It’s our family taking care of yours.

“We have been overwhelmed with the number of people who have responded to our original Facebook post asking for donations of food, gifts, and their time; it’s been lovely.

“This is a great community here, and we just want it to do what it does best and bring everyone together on Christmas Day.”

Alex added: “We have had a bit of feedback regarding transport and I’m happy to do some pickups and drop-offs if it helps people get here.

“We would also like to thank everyone who has offered to help us; we have been inundated with offers of assistance and donations, so we would like to say a huge thanks to everyone who has got involved.

“Anyone who is interested in attending our Christmas Day event should call the Skybar on 0141 6479070 and book a free place and join us as we celebrate Christmas and raise a glass to those who can’t be with us.”

Next Wednesday’s event isn’t the first time Harley’s has opened its doors on the big day.

Back in 2017, the pub hosted a festive meal for around 80 disadvantaged families who regularly use foodbanks.

Children received a box full of presents courtesy of the football teams who play in the Sunday Central Amateur league.
