Nursery kids helping others for Christmas
A group of kind-hearted youngsters at a Cambuslang nursery have shown the true meaning of Christmas – by helping others.
Kids at High Flyers, on Cairns Road, have been designing baubles, calendars and other festive gifts over recent weeks.
They have then given the gifts to their parents – as long as the adults handed in items for the Rutherglen and Cambuslang foodbank.
The result has been a large number of goods collected for the worthy cause, much to the delight of the nursery’s staff.
They started the project as a way of teaching the youngsters about enterprise, and also the importance of helping others.
Christine Taggert, of High Flyers, explained: “We did something similar earlier this year when it was the children’s graduation, and asked the parents to donate to the foodbank and help them out.
“The foodbank team was so grateful that we thought we should try and do something again, and Christmas seemed the best time to launch it.”
Christine believes the idea has helped the children with both their creative skills and with understanding the importance for caring for those less fortunate.
She went on: “The kids saw the food being collected and asked why all these tins and boxes were there and where they were going.
“We explained that they were for those less fortunate and that not everyone was lucky at Christmas time.
“It was also an enterprise project, as they were exchanging the gifts they’d created, like the baubles for the Christmas tree, along with other items..”
And mums and dads were happy to help out too.
Christine added: “The response was great. Some parents even went beyond what we were asking for and brought in extra items.
“One parent came in with 14 boxes of cereal, and others brought in additional items too.
“We know these things can make a difference, especially at this time of year.”
The items were donated to the foodbank last week.
