Scotland has right to choose its own future
It is a great honour to have been returned, once again, to represent the people of Rutherglen and Hamilton West as their Member of Parliament at Westminster.
A winter election is not ideal, for either the candidates or the voters. However, I thoroughly enjoyed chapping doors and meeting people during the campaign.
The excellent result we achieved last week was down to my fantastic campaign team, drawn from the four strong SNP Branches in the constituency
And I would like to thank every last one of them for their efforts, and for all the support given to me over the past few months. Whilst we disagree on what Scotland’s future should be, I would also like to thank Ged Killen for representing the constituency for the last twoand-a-half years.
I would also commend him, and others in Scottish Labour, for their frank reflections on the election result over the past few days, and their recognition that Scotland’s future must be decided by the Scottish people.
That is a very welcome development.
I wish Ged and his staff all the best for the future.
We are already hearing about what this election means for Brexit and, in turn, for all of us. This echoes what I heard on the doorsteps; folk worried about local concerns, some about national ones, many a mixture of the two. All shared the same backdrop of the chaos of Brexit, of a system that wasn’t working for them, of a hope that something could and would change.
The fevered fantasies of the Tory right are not the future that Scotland wants.
The people of Rutherglen and Hamilton West reject attempts to sell off our NHS to Donald Trump’s cronies, they reject the injustices meted out to the WASPI women, they say no to foodbanks, and to the sleekit dismantling of our welfare state.
And they have said a loud and clear no to a Westminster elite that thinks it alone has the right to decide our future
With the SNP recording a resounding victory across the country, fellow Scots, of all backgrounds have made it very clear that they reject the broken promises of 2014, and demand that Scotland’s voice be heard.
It is clear that more and more Scots, of all political persuasions, and often with differing views on independence, are recognising this victory as a clear mandate for Scotland having the right to choose its own future.
I am looking forward to getting to work for all my constituents and hope to have an office and surgeries up and running early in the new year.
In the meantime I can be contacted at: margaretferriersnp@outlook. com. May I take the opportunity to wish all my constituents a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
