Striker seals deal

Jay McKay signs contract extension with Glens

- JONATHAN GEDDES

Rutherglen Glencairn striker Jay McKay has penned a new deal at the club – now he’s hoping to help fire them to safety this season.

The talented marksman has been out for four months with a knee injury, but he is now on the mend.

Last week he signed a new two-year contract, which will keep him at the Glens until the summer of 2022, and he is delighted to have secured his future at the club.

He said: “I’ve been there four years now and I like everything about the club – I work in Rutherglen too (at South West Paint Supplies), so it was a simple decision that I wanted to stay on.

“I’m 30 now and fed up of moving about. I did that a bit when I was younger and I don’t really fancy that again.

“It took me a few years to find somewhere that I was settled and I’m at the stage where I’m quite happy staying.”

However, it has been a miserable season so far for Jay after he suffered a knee injury in September against Troon.

The injury has left him on the sidelines as Glencairn suffered a terrible run of form, with the club now sitting second bottom of the league.

Jay said: “It has been a nightmare, but I’ll be doing a full week of training this week.

“You want to be on the park helping the boys out because we can’t get that wee break at the moment that could turn things around. Maybe the draw at the weekend [against Largs Thistle] could be what we need..

“I think we need one victory just to give us a boost but that clean sheet on Saturday was great.”

However, the forward knows he cannot rush his return and added: “I’ve wanted to play as soon as I was in training again but at the moment it’s about biding my time and hopefully getting some minutes under my belt .

“It was about six weeks before I got back to walking again after the injury, and there was a wee tear in my calf too .

“It’s a lot better now and I can’t wait to get back.”

Meanwhile, winger Gavin Mackie has been placed on the transfer list.

The former Kirkintilloch Rob Roy man only joined the club in the summer, but has since fallen out of favour.
