Lang on the march

Cambuslang Rangers record 2-0 victory

- Scott Young

A fine win for Cambuslang against Irvine Victoria sent them up to 14th place in the table after a dominant 90 minutes at Somervell Park.

Goals from Ciaron Smith and BScott McKean gave the Lang a much needed three points and their first win in five, while leaving Irvine at the foot of the table.

As this was such a massive game for both teams, it did seem like both sides were being more cautious and not giving much away but Cambuslang were the side on the front foot in the first 10 minutes of the encounter, piling on the pressure

However, despite being under the cosh, Irvine Victoria could’ve and should’ve been awarded a penalty when Chimwemwa Goma raced through on goal and looked to have been taken out by Kevin McAllister in the ‘Lang goal, but the referee judged that McAllister won the ball.

Only seconds later, Cambuslang really should have taken the lead after a ball clipped to the back post fell to Smith, who really should have done better but shot over the bar.

‘Vics would’ve had the referees head on a platter if that’d gone in.

For the rest of the first half, there wasn’t much to report on as although there was a lot of pressure from Cambuslang, they struggled to create a lot of real clear-cut opportunities.

The second half started with the home side on the front foot and searching desperately for that opening goal.

They really should have got it as well when Scott Jarvie was played through on goal but he fired it straight at ‘Vics keeper Blair Cousar.

Cambuslang eventually got their well-deserved goal when Scott McKean did well to turn and fire it towards Smith, who had been desperate for a goal all afternoon.

He was able to shoot beyond Cousar to give Cambuslang the lead they had so desperately craved.

It was almost a quickfire double from the ‘Lang as Jarvie headed the ball onto the top of the bar from just outside the six-yard box, very unlucky not to give them a two-goal cushion.

However, that advantage did come in the 80th minute and it came from McKean.

When a free kick from McGeechan was fired straight at Cousar , he dropped the ball in front of McKean, who won’t score an easier goal all season.
