Choir raise voices in aid of cancer charity

- JONATHAN GEDDES

A popular choir are to perform in Rutherglen next month to raise funds for a worthy cause.

The Glasgow Phoenix Choir will be at Rutherglen United Reformed Church on February 16, with the funds from the concert going towards Breast Cancer Now.

The Glasgow Phoenix Choir rose out of the ashes of the world-famous Glasgow Orpheus Choir and this year will celebrate a whopping 119 years of choral excellence – 69 years as the Glasgow Phoenix Choir and the previous 50 years as the Glasgow Orpheus Choir.

The choir is currently directed by new conductor, Cameron Murdoch and will perform a range of music on the day, from choral standards to new music.

Breast Cancer Now is the leading breast cancer charity in Scotland, and they support research and services across the country.

They aim to champion the needs of people diagnosed with breast cancer, and do so by supporting scientists working on research projects, by running face-to-face support services and by being a member of the Scottish Cancer Coalition and supporting the Scottish Government’s ‘Detect Cancer Early’ programme.

Mr Murdoch joined the choir in 1987 as Accompanist and Depute Conductor and is an Honours graduate in music from the University of Glasgow, who also studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

He regularly plays harpsichord and piano with various musical ensembles and performs throughout the British Isles.

He is also Organist and Choir Master of St John’s Renfield Church in Glasgow’s West End.

Many of the pieces in the current Phoenix repertoire were arranged by Cameron and the concert promises to be an afternoon to be savoured by music lovers.

Tickets for the concert are priced at £10 and it will take place at 2.30pm.

There will be complimentary tea or coffee to enjoy after the concert.
