Cambuslang rugby captain Euan Jones has told his teammates to pick up the pace – or wave goodbye to Division 1 rugby.

Cambus crashed to a 19-13 defeat against Annan on Saturday.

And although they earned a losing bonus point, the local side are still second bottom of the league.

Their upcoming fixtures are against title-chasing East Kilbride and Garnock, which means their hopes for survival could go to the wire.

And Jones was fed up after another slow start, which saw Cambuslang give up two tries in the first 10 minutes.

He said: “The first 10 minutes we were slow getting out the blocks and they punished us. It’s a long trip there and it felt like we were still on the bus (at the start of the game) but that wasn’t the only reason we lost.

“They are a good team at home. They upped the physicality early on a nd we were down 14-0 before we knew it.

“There were a few individual errors and it meant that we were facing an uphill battle from the start. It’s happened too often this season.

“We were down by only an try with 10 minutes left but couldn’t create anything, but if we hadn’t given ourselves so much to do at the start then we could have won the game.”

Andrew Greenan scored all the points for Cambus, with a try, a conversion and two penalties.

The losing bonus point did lift Cambuslang above Irvine, who they will play on the final day of the season.

But Jones knows how difficult the Coat’s Park’s side’s next two games will be.

He said: “East Kilbride at home will be really tough.

“They like to play a very upfront, and physical game and we will need to front up to try and cope with that.

“Sometimes this season when we play the bigger teams we forget our plans and structure and end up playing their game.

“We have to play our own style and try and cope with them that way.

“We are always optimistic that we can win games if we play to our strengths.

“But we know that there aren’t many games left now and we need to improve for the whole 80 minutes.”

Saturday’s game kicks off at Coat’s Park at 2pm.
