Rutherglen author Irene Lebeter is celebrating the publication of her fourth novel – just weeks ahead of her 78th birthday.

Next Wednesday, Irene will be in Rutherglen library to sign copies of ‘Who Were You?’ – a romance set in New Zealand.

It the fourth novel Irene has had published on Amazon in the past six years by Authorway.

“My main character is a journalist and there is a bit of romance and mystery,” explained Irene.

“There is a throw back to the 1950s and ‘60s, with a small section of the story taking place in Dundee.

“I tried to put myself in the head of someone working for a newspaper in New Zealand.

“There’s a connection with a friend of her gran, who lives in Dundee. I try and present my main character with a challenge.

“As well as being a romance, there’s something she comes up against and has to deal with.”

Irene drew her inspiration from when she worked in New Zealand and Australia in the 1970s.

It’s a departure from her previousnovel, The Clock Chimed Midnight – a tale of a teenage girl who moves back to Rutherglen after emigrating to Australia.

The main character, Elinor, resented her homesick mother for their decision to return, but threw herself into a new life with many difficulties to deal with.

Irene, who used her extensive knowledge and experiences of the Royal Burgh to pen a novel which intertwines a young girl’s journey with the history of Lanarkshire, enjoyed support from fellow Ruglonians whose interest in her work was piqued by the inclusion of some of the town’s most iconic buildings and areas.

She even used a picture of the town hall on its front cover.

As well as buying from Amazon, the book – which is also available in paperback and kindle format – can be purchased directly from Irene by calling her directly on 0141 647 8635.

They will also be on sale at Rutherglen town hall.

All are welcome to attend her book signing next Wednesday in the library between 2pm and 4pm.
